Snowpack
3-5" of new snow from Sun. Prior to the 1/11 new snow, widespread surface hoar observed, even on summits such as Red 3 and Red 2 (sfh melted off on S'ly slopes). This sfh layer is now buried by the 1/11 new snow. Several hand shears provided evidence that this will be a poor bond once the incoming storm delivers. Several hand tests targeting the mid and basal persistent weak layers produced moderate fractures, propagation was non-existent; regardless: the possibility of stepping down into older, deeper persistent weak layers is there once sufficient new snow and wind drifted snow adds its weight. S'ly slopes have a more or less supportive crust. Several minor sluffs observed on that crust on very steep terrain; likely that crust (especially with the new cold low density layer ontop) is likely preventing good bonding with the incoming storm snow. Below treeline, NW-E are predominantly facets and doubtful to provide a solid foundation with the incoming storm snow.
