Snowpack
Pit Profile Day. 28* slope. HS 96 cm. HST 15cm fluffy stellars ! Storm snow overlying a structurally weak but evident midpack of 1F hard snow over advanced facets and depth hoar. Supportive to ski penetration but not to boot penetration. Stability tests resulted in showing poor bonding of the storm snow to the old surface snow as well as a weakness within the storm snow at a possible density change. Repeated compression tests resulted in hard failures but with sudden collapse fracture characteristics on the basal depth hoar layer. Two layers of obvious concern: Storm snow showing poor bonding to old snow surface on Northerly aspects, and red flag fracture characteristics with hard test results on the basal depth hoar layer
