Near and below treeline, the surfaces on southerly aspects are moist and have seen multiple melt/freeze cycles. The moist snow is not reaching below the top 5-10 centimeters. Colder, shadier aspects at the same elevations are covered with 5-10 centimeters of near surface facets. Buried graupel layers at 70 and 140 cm from the ground can still be found on northerly aspects but are unreactive
