Cruickshank Weather Station

Went up to take a look at the Cruickshank weather station and surrounding terrain on the edge of Strathcona Park today. We wanted to get a sense of what surfaces would be buried by the incoming storm snow. We found a variety! From a hard crust formed by tree bombs and drippings, to nice low density snow in open areas not affected by wind. We also found 3-5 mm surface hoar in sheltered areas, and a very supportive melt freeze crust was present at lower elevations. This crust became less supportive as we gained elevation and made for some ugly turns.
