Mt Buller chute

Fun morning and fantastic bootpacking conditions on one of the chutes of Mt Buller (outlier). The main chute had a large cornice at the top, and was threatened by cornices on the ridge above. We opted for the next couloir to the lookers left, which had no overhead hazard. Ski crampons were essential for the fan, which was a mix of bulletproof, wind affected and breakable crust. Once into the chute, after a brief band of facets, the bootpacking was excellent (no crampons required) right to the top. Minimal wind and shade all morning. The ski down was great, with a mix of chalky powder, wind pressed and the occasional crusty section. If you go, don't forget to park outside the avalanche zone. The fan hadn't corned up by 12pm, so it was a bit rough but the snow at the roadside was warming fast. No avalanche activity was observed. It was -4 at 8am and +6 at 12pm. Sparrowhawk looked to be in decent condition (refer to photo).
