There was a recorded 5 hrs of freeze overnight at nearby weather stations on Red Mountain Pass (11,200 ft). Temperatures reached 45 degrees by 1 pm. Northwest winds picked up by the afternoon. In general, early afternoon winds seem to be the San Juan recipe for the Spring. A Silverton old timer passed on some seasoned wisdom, saying, "the winds will stop when the snow melts," we'll see if this holds true this season.
Snowpack
Traveled between 8:30am and 1:30pm. Upper snowpack contained a stout melt-freeze crust underneath smooth, softening surface conditions. No notable signs of instability. Surprisingly good coverage remains on north aspects, ski pole probing revealed over a meter of snow remaining mid-path on the 'Backside of the Battleship' avalanche path.
