The storm subsided and we observed several natural storm slab avalanches to size 2 which had occurred during the storm sometime on Mammoth Head. The slabs were mainly under cliff features. With high hazard and observed avalanches, we avoided slopes over 30 degrees, overhead hazard, and terrain traps. This afternoon the sun came out and the temperature dropped, but we didn’t let the nice weather lure us into forgetting about the very hazardous avalanche conditions.

We observed a “pop” (sudden planar) while isolating the column of snow down 36 at the storm snow interface. The test was performed again and we got another “pop” in the moderate range at 11 taps. We also got 2 “drops” (sudden collapse) in the hard range in facets under the December 8th crust which is very prominent.
