Skies cleared this morning as our first significant winter storm moved out of the area. Cold and Clear conditions continue through this afternoon.
Snowpack
4-6" of snow fell in the North San Juan zone in the past 24 hours. With cold temperatures the snow was low density (light and fluffy). This brings storm total to around 6-9" since Monday. It appears Red Mountain Pass and the Ophir area picked up the most snow from this storm. Observers reported less snow accumulation to the south of Silverton and near Rico. Before Monday's storm, very few slopes held continuous snow cover. This will likely change and be our first layer of the season, especially on shady slopes above treeline. The new snow will begin to facet as high pressure builds and continues through the weekend. Northerly winds Wednesday afternoon were strong enough to move the new snow onto leeward slopes.
