Weather

Cold, clear, and windy in the alpine. Beautiful day in the San Juan Mountains.

Snowpack

The wind was strong enough to move snow at upper elevations, but loading appeared to be inefficient. We dug on an east slope at ~11,700 and found a right-side-up snowpack just under a meter deep. No October snow was observed at the bottom of the snowpack, and we did not get any propagating test results, cracking, or collapsing while traveling on this or similar slopes. On sunny, and below treeline slopes the snowpack is settling quickly and the surface turning moist. We would expect a curst to form as temperatures drop.

Avalanche

No avalanche activity observed.
