Snowpack

Recent layers of storm snow in the upper snowpack make up 50% of the total snowpack depth for this area. This upper layer has formed a slab, up to 1f hardness, sitting above very weak depth hoar grains in the lower half of the snowpack. I also found several older surface hoar layers buried in the middle and upper snowpack (see profile). Collapses and shooting cracks still occurred while traveling in this area, though less frequently than last week. When they did occur, collapses were large and rumbling, and cracks propagated up to 50 feet from my ski tips. A new surface hoar layer has formed on top of the snowpack during the last two nights.
