Ski touring on east aspects today we found 25cm of storm snow sitting on old buried sugary surface facets. Above 1500m it was a different story and 6cm of new snow sat on top a supportive crust (Monday’s wind effect.) We had a few good whumphs around 1450m. Recognizing this as a sign of instability we stayed on low angle terrain. The average snowpack height was 120cm-140cm. Our layer of concern was 24cm of new snow on top of now buried old sugary surface facets from the cold snap of a few weeks ago. There’s a consolidated midpack with sugary facets below. There’s good skiing to be had and the best turns are in the trees below 1500m.
