Today we accessed the south bowls around Mt. Fee. A beautiful day to be out but it came with some challenges. In the trees and around tree line skinning was a challenge created by a classic dust in crust situation. The snow in the alpine was mostly 5-10cm of low density powder on top of a consistent crust. Southerly slopes were heating rapidly and pin wheels and wet sluff was visible.
Snowpack
Slope: NE. Elevation: 1900. Pitch: 30 degrees. We observed many weak layers. The first was found reactive at CT 13 with a sudden planar character sliding on a crust down 20cm. The second down 30cm on CT 15, resistant planer, sliding on wind crust. On CT20 we found a dense slab reacting resistant planar down 60cm. On southerly slopes, sun effect was noticeable. We saw pinwheels, tree bombs, and wet loose point releases around rocks ranging from size .5 to 1.
