AST 1 field day with the Hope Mountain Centre. Toured N. Ridge out of bounds at the Manning Park Ski Hill to 1760m . HS varied from 80 cm to 110 cm. Light to Moderate wind from the N and NW. Temp (1200 hrs) -9 C. Had a squall the delivered approximately 5 cm of low density snow (otherwise sky was scattered in the AM, and broken in the PM). Approx 30 cm low density HST overlies a well settled mid pack. This sits on top of a 5mm crust, facet, surface hoar layer (Nov 12 ?) down 75 to 100 cm. In some areas, this crust was 10 cm. Test Results ( E aspect, 1760 m, slope angle 25 degrees, air temp -9 C). CTE 5 down 23 SP (HST interface), CTM 16 down 42 SP, CTH 23 down 75 on the crust/ facet/ surface hoar layer (SH 3 to 8 mm - showing signs of decomposing). Extended Column Test: ECTP 24 down 75 cm on the crust, facet, surface hoar interface. RB was in low angle terrain so no real results although the SF, CR FC interface was shoeing signs of wanting to move. This would be a layer to keep an eye on in this region. Stayed to lower angle terrain on the ski down. Ski quality was excellent low density powder. Could see and feel wind affected (slab) snow on the ridge top during our tour. Overall and excellent day out with a fun group.
