It felt poetic to start and end our field team season on Elk mountain. Our word of day today would be moist. The snow began on the road just past kilometre 1, but wasn't providing reliable coverage until kilometre 3. The surface crust was 2cm thick and the snow below it is definitely moist. Snowmobile travel is fairly easy, but when we jumped on our skis at 1100m, our ski penetration was 10-20cm with a breakable crust. We enjoyed a mix of sunshine and convective snow showers throughout the day. Digging into the snow, we could find that same rotten crust down 20cm from April 18, but we are unable to get any results from it. The turns down were more pleasant than expected, but that's not to say they weren't heavy, quad burners.
