Snowpack
In the past two days forecasters measured around 7 inches of low density snow at the Molas pass study site. Similar snow depth were observed around Snowden Peak, with drifts of over a foot in gully features. Northerly winds were strong enough to drift snow near and above treeline today and some north facing start zone are stripped of any new snow. The new snow is not bonding well to the existing firm snow surfaces on slopes stepper than about 35 degrees at upper elevations and we easily triggered loose avalanches that ran as far a 1000 feet. Cracking observed in the surface snow, but shallow. No collapsing.
