2-6cm of faceting settled powder (DF) sits on top of a 2-5cm breakable crust (MFcr). The crust became much thinner and the surface snow deeper above 1900m. Low angle terrain made for the best travel conditions.
Weather
Beautiful day. Clear skies. Warming temps, and a light cool W breeze.
Snowpack
Below 1700m the snowpack is very thin. HS generally 30-45cm) The upper snowpack consist of very soft (F) 7-15mm surface hoar over 2-8cm of settled powder (DF) that showed signs of faceting. The 3/1(?) melt freeze crust was typically 2-5cm thick and not supportable to boot nor skis. Below the crust settled snow (DF->RG) was found. The Surface Hoar was melting back only on steep (>25?) southerly aspects. The next major crust layer was probed at 75-85cm below the surface around 2000m.
Avalanche
Old wet avalanche debris from this past week's storm was evident on the E Face of Mt Crowe along with numerous large rollerballs.
