Snowpack

During the clear night into Sunday, the surface of the snowpack will freeze above approximately 2000 m to become capable of bearing loads. Sunshine will cause it to soften during the course of the day.

Moisture penetration into the snowpack is well advanced. The most precarious areas are slopes where weak layers in the old snowpack are becoming wet for the first time. At present, this mainly affects north-facing slopes between approximately 2200 and 2500 m, and east- and west-facing slopes between approximately 2500 and 2800 m. On south-facing slopes, moisture penetration into the snowpack extends as far as the high alpine regions. In Grisons, the weak layers in the old snowpack are the least deeply buried, which means that wet slab avalanches can also be triggered by human activity in some places.

Higher up, the snowpack is still dry. There are still weak layers in the old snowpack.

In general, hardly any avalanches have been reported in recent days.

The night will be mostly clear. It will be sunny in the north during the day with cumulus clouds as the day progresses. In the south, it will be quite sunny at first. It will become increasingly cloudy in the afternoon and light showers are possible in some localities. The zero-degree level will be around 3000 m. The winds will be mostly light. Touring conditions will be favourable in the early morning. As daytime temperatures rise and with the sunshine, the danger of wet avalanches will increase rapidly. Tours and hut ascents should be started early and finished in good time.

Tuesday

It will be variably cloudy over a wide area with showers and thunderstorms, but also brighter spells. Most of the precipitation will fall in the far south, with 15 to 30 mm expected. The snowfall level will be around 2400 m. The winds will be light to moderate from the southwest. The danger of dry avalanches may increase slightly in the high alpine regions. Where there is reduced outgoing longwave radiation during the night and with the rain, the danger of wet avalanches will be heightened already in the early morning.
